Not illustrated. 1911 Excerpt: ...Vol. I APRIL, 1911 No. 3 THE SCHOOL OF CIVIC DESIGN AT THE LIVERPOOL UNIVERSITY THE School of Civic Design, at Liverpool, is a department of the Liverpool University's School of Architecture, from which it has developed. A reference to the School of Architecture at once invites consideration of the principles which underlie its direction. The Architectural School, with Professor C. H. Reilly at its head, stands for monumental architecture in England. Its creed is clear, concise, and, one might almost say, dogmatic. Its aim is to confine the attention of the student to a distinct phase of architectural thought. He is encouraged to draw his inspirations from chosen examples, rather than from a disconnected and endless assortment of styles and periods, --a system of education which is so bewildering to the student whose taste and judgment is as yet unformed. In its choice of example, it prefers the pure form of the Greek and of the Greek revival to the sentiment of the Romantic school and to the revival of the Goth. In his course of study, the student commences with the orders, which are drawn out with their attendant details and "objects de vertu " associated with the period to which they belong, and later designs in composition are worked out in rapid succession. The draughting is explicit; a clear, hard line is insisted upon, with the shadows correctly shown. Under Professor Reilly's guidance, the Liverpool School has now come to be recognized as the first, if not the only, school in England which stands for monumental architecture and classic tradition.
